The Yorkshire terriers, or Yorkies, originated from Scotland but bred in England. They were molded to hunt rats, but nowadays they are popular as pets. In fact, their variety was one of the Top Dog Breeds of 2005.

They usually grow being small and light varieties. Hence, owners do not mind having their pets on their lap almost all day. Moreover, this usual bonding activity usually transforms this lap dog into a bright, playful, and loyal companion pet.

The following are some of the basic facts breeders would really love to know about Yorkies:

Category: Toy (Terrier)

Living Environment: indoors (highly recommended); outdoors (fenced yard)

Coat: silky, glossy, long and fine; no undercoat

Colors: black when young but they attain the colors tan and blue as they mature . Height: between 8 and 9 inches

Weight: between 3 and 7 pounds

Temperament:

Naturally,

•	they are territorial and like their privacy to be respected
•	they are intelligent and fearless
•	they are assertive and independent

When properly trained,

•	they develop close affinity with older children
•	they become really playful and lively
•	they become extremely affectionate
•	they do not mind having other pets at home
•	they focus much of their attention and affection toward their owner

Breeders should note of the following health issues:

• Alopecia, or losing hair
• Cataract, or loss of transparency of one or both lenses of the eyes
• Cryptorchidism, wherein testicles do not descend into the scrotum
• Dwarfism
• Entropion, a disorder with the eyelid; lashes on the eyelid that irritate the eyeballs could lead to other complications
• Glaucoma, a condition that causes an increase pressure within the eye
• Hydrocephalus
• Keratoconjunctivitis sicca, or the reduction of tear production
• Low blood sugar
• Patellar luxation, a disorder in the kneecap
• Portosystemic shunt, or the accumulation of blood toxins in the liver
• Urolithiasis, an infection of the urinary tract leading to the formation of bladder stones.

Care and Exercise:

•	They require daily grooming.
•	Ears and eyes must be cleaned and checked regularly.
•	Dental hygiene must be regularly maintained.
•	They are fit only for short strides.
•	They should have a regular play time while lying under the sunbeams, chasing shadows, and joining tug-of-war.

Origin/History:

In the 19th century, a number of weavers from Scotland migrated to England and brought with them different terriers that were bred to hunt rats. Through time, these terriers were crossed and terriers with “broken hairs” were produced.

In 1870, a “broken-haired Scotch terrier” was named as a Yorkshire terrier by a reporter. He argued that the breed should be called as such because his types were bred in a town called Yorkshire.

Though the Yorkies were originally bred as working dogs, they became fashionable pets is England in the latter part of the Victorian era. In 1972, Yorkies were brought to the United States and became the country’s favorite pet.

You can say that the Yorkies developed into tough breeds because of their ancestors’ reputation as rat-hunters. However, their size, and playful and bright character have actually captured the attention and affection of most pet owners. Most proud owners would boast that they have the great giants inside the bodies of these little dogs. If you want a small but terrible breed of dog, grab a Yorkie now! Just a friendly reminder, they would really need your attention and companionship than any other terriers.

Heartworm pills are one of the easiest ways to protect our Dogs and Cats from developing heartworms. the problem lies in purchasing them with no prescription needed. It is fairly simple to find them prescription free as you will now learn.

The problem lies with the classification of pet medicines in different countries. The US allows virtually no heartworm pills to be sold unless you have a prescription from your vets. What many don’t realise is that if you simply purchase from Canada then you can purchase quite a wide range that are prescription free. Not all of the heartworm pills can be bought without prescription but there is a large enough choice that one will certainly be suitable for your pet.

You can choose from generic heartworm pills or brands like Heartgard and Proheart. The generics are very cost effective and you will find that all the pet medications are much cheaper if you find the right online Canadian store.

Canada seems much more enlightened when it comes to trusting us as pet owners to act sensibly if using heartworm treatments. No prescription means we can purchase quickly if we need the pills and do away with a costly visit to the vets. This makes obtaining the pills quick and cheap. Heartgard Plus is still a very popular choice and is highly recommended.

If you want heartworm pills with no prescription needed then consider purchasing from online Canadian stores. They are cheap, efficient and will mean that you get the pills much cheaper.

At some stage in your life, as a horse owner you may find it necessary to stable your horse. It may only be for a couple of nights, a week or a more permanent situation. No matter your reason or the length of your horses stay it is important that you clean the stable or barn at least once a day.

So you arrive at you horses stable with a cheery “Good Morning!” you organize their breakfast, change there pajamas (rugs), maybe go for an early morning ride (nice and chilly on those crisp winter mornings), but no matter what else you do there is one thing every owner of a stabled horse does and that is to clean the mess up from the night before.

What a mess!! It really amazes me the mess one horse can make within 8-10 hours! I have been greeted with a wide variety of “Good Morning” situations from my horses over the years from finding poo in the feed dish (which is still hanging on the door!), to finding poo right in front of the door in the walk way! No matter the mess, it still needs to be cleaned up. Not only can a dirty or poorly cleaned stable cause diseases to fester, but they smell bad too.

Here are some simple steps to help you in cleaning out your stable! You will need a good stable fork/rake and a wheelbarrow or bucket.

It is always helpful if you can remove your horse from the stable, so that you aren’t worried about him/her escaping. Otherwise make sure they are tied up securely.

Remove any other objects which may get in your way, such as water buckets and horse toys.

Using your stable fork/rake remove all large piles of poo that are visible.

Remove any obvious wet patches.

Starting on either your left or right in a circular pattern around the stable, toss a fork full of stable bedding towards the side of the stable, remove any poo or wet that this process uncovers.

Remember to dig down to the floor so that all the bedding gets exposed, and continue till you are back to where you started.

Your stable bedding should now be all piled up around the sides of the stable and the floor exposed. If the floor seems wet (will be in most cases) it is great if you can leave it exposed for a few hours to dry out, otherwise continue on.

Starting at either the right or left, pull the bedding down with your stable rake so that the bedding comes back to its original level and covers the previously exposed floor. Continue around till you are back at the start.

You may find that you need to smooth out the bedding so that it is level and covers the floor evenly.

I have always found it a good idea to leave an area in front of the door free from bedding, this will help reduce the bedding that gets ‘walked’ or ‘kicked’ out by your horse.

You may find that when cleaning, some bedding drifts into the water. It is always a good idea to clean out your horses’ water after finishing the stable.

It may be necessary to add more new bedding to you stable, this is usually down once a week, but depends on your horse.

It will also be necessary to remove all bedding from your stable on a regular base. This will depend on numerous factors and is up to your discretion. If it is getting smell then its time for a full clean out!

Now that you’re done you can enjoy some quality time with your beloved horse!

Happy Horsing

Comparing Wood Stoves and Pellet Stoves
Author: David Fishman
A wood stove is a device, which is normally used in the kitchens for the heating of food, keeping it warm and making it palatable. Some antique wooden stoves can be used for the purpose of heating and cooking even today. Wood stoves are used for household cooking needs as well as for heating purposes.

One of the purposes of a wood burning stove was to enclose the fire so to generate more heat and make the heating more efficient. A wood stove is often used for heating rooms or cooking food.

They are made up of cast iron and other strong metals and are sturdy enough to handle the amount of heat generated. A stove uses other sources of fuel to burn and make heat, many use wood or pellets. Wood stoves are also used to heat homes apart from their cooking function. Some come with glass panes that can handle the heat but adds a nice touch when you see the flame.

It is important to know what types of fuel your particular type of burning stove can use and what cannot be used safely. When purchasing a pellet stove or a wood burning stove, there are many factors to consider before making the purchase. There are a few things to think about before purchasing and installing a wood burning stove in your home. After calculating the installation space understanding how to keep all the combustible items safe you need to hook up the chimney so the smoke is directed to the outside.

Want something different than carrying in wood, cutting wood and storing it, then try out the new pellet stoves, you can store the pellet easily, there is no cutting, no mess, but it gives you the feel of a wood burning stove. When looking at wood stoves and pellet stoves the pellet stoves are a little more expensive but the plus side is that they come ready to use, they are cleaner and easier to use. This is 20% less efficient than wood pellet or corn stoves. Pellet stoves are very easy to use, you don’t need to cut wood all you need to do is open the bag of pellets and poor them in, the auger will move the pellets as needed to be burned. Pellet stoves have a mechanical part that feeds the fire when needed; you do not have to go near the hot flame. You can get the pellets anywhere today, most of the major hardware stores carry the easily to carry bags. Stove are cheaper and you can use them with a cheaper fuel source such as pellets, firewood or any other type of materials.

Antique wood stoves are collector’s items that are very valuable to some people. There are many different types of antique wood stoves available. Today you can find the stoves in local household stores, furniture stores and many stores that sell antiques.

Some of the older wood stoves are considered antiques, and many people use these pieces as decoration purposes only. Many antique pieces from the past are available for sale today in different antique shops and on the Internet.

Free Standing Wood Stoves
Wood stoves are used around the world for cooking and heating. The main material used as fuel is firewood. These stoves are available in various forms, shapes, sizes and prices as per the customer’s preferences.

An increasing number of options are available to customers as more unique designs and user-friendly models come into being. One such option is the free standing wood stove. As the name suggests, the stove is not attached to any wall or other device for support. It stands freely by itself on a pedestal base or a four-legged stand.

A free standing wood stove is movable and can be placed almost anywhere the user desires. It has a convenient lower ashtray, which collects the ash that is produced. This can be easily emptied from time to time. These wood stoves are made of heavy plate steel with a firebrick liner inside. The front of the stove has a transparent glass window, which allows the user to observe the burning wood. These transparent front panes are generally made from good quality glass that can tolerate the excessive heat generated by the stove. Many stove manufacturers ensure that they follow the recommended industry standards for safety, quality and performance.

Some manufacturers sell the various parts such as legs and stands separately. This makes it more convenient for users whose stoves might have been damaged with a broken base or stand. Some manufactures provide a warranty on their products ranging from three to five years. Some might also offer lifetime warranties on their free standing wood stoves.

Some of the free standing wood stoves can be fitted with different kinds of pedestals or legs so as to alter their appearance. A chimney maybe attached to the stove to provide a passage for the smoke.
A free standing wood stove is perfect for anyone who wants the convenience of a stove without the rigidity of a fixed installation.

Dogs are active creatures that love running, giddily hopping around while sticking its tongue for a wild playful breath. This alertness oftentimes leads to unwanted damage of properties that make pet owners seek precautions or disciplinary actions that tends to be rude and unjust. Keep in mind that every dog deserves the pampering, which offers a hundred percent affection, TLC attention, and protection exercised in a manner that does not deprive your pet its freedom. These dogs would love to feel the safety of your touch and the security under your presence. So the harsh way of training his discipline and teaching him a lesson by locking him up? Guarding him 24 hours a day-seven days a week and even putting a shackle around his neck definitely makes him unhappy.

Now how do you keep everything on track without compromising your pet’s emotions? The solution to such problems lies on dog containment systems that come in different types in the market today. You may want to provide your dog with an indoor system, which consists of a gate that allows your dog to keep either in or out of the house without you having to open or close the door for your pet. Alternatively, if you have a patio door, patio dog doors are available. Coming in varied sizes and design, you will surely find the design that suite your pick!

On the other hand, if an owner happens to be a constant traveler, thus frequently leaving the house, a more technologically advanced system is perhaps better—the wireless containment system. This type of dog containment system restricts your dog to enter restricted areas though a built-in invisible electrical wiring. Having this on the yard keeps your beautifully landscaped garden showed off and not being concealed by metal or wooden fences.

In purchasing any of the dog containment systems that suits your lifestyle, you do not only guarantee you and your pet a healthy relationship but more importantly, your pet is given liberty to run around and have fun. Then if fun never wants to stop, why not provide dog agility equipment for your pet to maximize excitement in a sporty way! This builds the dog’s strength and improves movement. Pet shops offer complete lines of accessories and dog agility equipment such as pause tables, seesaw, chutes, tunnels, hurdles, and lots more.

Now, are you bothered if your pet stays clean after these activities? Flea and tick is the name to seek. Flea and Tick keeps your pet clean and tick-free with its efficient non-toxic formula. There’s absolutely no worry.

Most animal advocate programs make it a goal to reach as many coastal families as possible in making them aware of disaster preparedness plans for their cats and other animals. The truth is that not only does danger lie in hurricane and tornado riddled areas, but the average home is also at risk for any number of sudden dangers.
Fires, floods, and other spontaneous happenings can cause as much risk at any time as tornadoes cause during tornado season.

The general idea is to just be prepared. There are many options for creating a safe escape route for your family but it is basically impossible to train your cat how to follow the family’s evacuation plan. This means that you must be ready to care for him/her in an emergency.

The plan can be elaborate and include an emergency set-up plan for evacuating your pet to a separate location or as simple as having a preparedness kit. Either way the plan should be preparation.

The recommended emergency kit includes all necessary items to pull your pet through a few days of unexpected living circumstances. Sixty one percent of families refuse to evacuate, in an emergency situation, if they can not bring their cats/kittens and other animals along. This is one possible situation when this kit will be handy and most valuable.

What you should do now in preparation is to ensure your cat has a collar with an up-to-date rabies tag and a legible, accurate identifying tag. The identification tag should include the cat/kitten’s name, your name, home address, all phone number’s, and an identification number to an internal microchip (if applicable). Anyone who may find your cat will need to have accurate information to contact you. You will want to take current picture of your cat and make a list of features, markings, and vital information. Create a file folder for this information. Create a list of hotels that accommodate animals within a one hundred mile radius that is inland to your current location. Create a kit that includes a full three day supply of everything needed to care for your feline, including a carrier, and keep it accessible.

Many people forget vital items such as prescriptions in emergencies. Having at least three days worth of all medications will ensure the safety of your pets health.

Dog training always ends up being an assignment even though it starts with a lot of fun. You might be tied up with much work, some times your dog gets bored and you don’t seem to make any progress. But you are not required to carry out the training process similarly offering a lecture as they obviously get bored. Instead it can be of tremendous fun for your entire family if you use play as frequent as possible.

The training would be much more effective, when your dog thinks its play time and you get him really interested by playing variety of games. The training process starts with the “COME” command which is one of the most important commands and it’s merely easy to teach him. But initially you may feel inconsistency. Your dog is not going to always come when ever you call. It will take time to get him practiced. It’s absolutely achievable with continuous enforcement. We used to make our kids excited by playing this game and we have to implement the same with our dogs to get a consistent and conditioned results and the game is HIDE AND SEEK!

Before starting this game, you make sure that your dog has an appetite and would eager to come running for a treat. Show him what you have got in your hand and put him in a stay. While he is sitting, you just leave the room and hide your self some where. Once you hide, you call his name and include the command “COME” while you recalling his name. Your dog will come running. When he found you, you cheer him up by offering a treat and lots of praise. Repeat the same game including different command. Just enjoy the fun with your family. It’s very funny watching him run into a room and start searching around when he doesn’t notice you. Don’t try to dump him with lot of exercise, then he will get confused.

Continuing this training process would create a great improvement on the activities of your pet. You can gradually find changes from your pet. It would become much obedient and listen when ever you call using the command which you have used while playing with your dog. The additional benefit you gain making this “a family activity” and have a nice time with your family as well. This also helps him to understand the command from the other family members as they are also included in this game. Don’t ever feel silly to play this game. I would assure you the real fun out of this game, you would feel like a kid again and it’s good to become a child.

The game is totally depends upon the mood of your dog at that time. Hence, keep this activity according to your pet’s convenience. Understanding the mood of your pet and uploading the knowledge on his head would make the job easy. It will save your time and allow him to stay without stress. We cannot tell that every pet enjoy this training activity. There are several mind blowing games are available to enjoy with your pets and family. Yet, use play when ever you can and your pet training program flourishes with liveliness.

Dental hygiene is important beyond having healthier teeth for dogs. Gum and teeth infection, broken teeth or tooth loss, and related periodontal problems involving connective tissue in the dog’s mouth can lead to bacteria making its way into the pet’s bloodstream. This can lead to infection of the heart, lungs, liver, intestinal tract, kidney and other internal organs and other side effects.

Dental pet care experts say that up to 80% of dogs manifest signs of dental diseases by three years in the absence of proper oral hygiene. Getting dogs accustomed to dental care as early as possible is crucial to ensuring their long-term health. With regular check-ups, cases such as bad bite or malocclusion, gingival irritation, deciduous teeth and tartar formation can be spotted earlier. This will prevent the situation from worsening and help save the dog’s teeth.

In some cases, veterinarians may advise pre-anesthesia blood work, or an overall health check to determine if the dog’s kidneys and other internal organs are functioning properly and if blood count is normal. The process will also help establish any potential risk before anesthesia is applied.

An antibiotic may be administered to dogs with bad teeth before the dental to eliminate the infection and minimize complications. Fasting will also be required the night before anesthesia application. The check-up itself will involve looking for cavities, gum pockets, loose teeth, tartar and unusual palate or gum growth.

It should be noted that pets seldom experience tooth decay, due in part to their non-acidic saliva, cone-shaped teeth and natural cleaning from their habit of chewing and gnawing. However, an owner who notices that his pet has bad breath must recognize this as a sign that infection is already present and that tartar has already built up.

Tartar can be found below the gums and breeds bacterial growth, leading to inflammation. Owners who know how dog teeth develop would be better equipped in handling such a situation.

After being born without any teeth, dogs grow them from the second or third week after birth. At about eight weeks, puppies generally have 28 temporary teeth, including incisors, pre-molars and canines, that they start losing when they reach 12 weeks.

Adult dogs grow about 42 permanent teeth that start appearing at six months. When this happens, some dogs can become uncomfortable, chewing actively and mouthing anything to ease the discomfort and pain.

Dogs develop incisors – 12 small front teeth – that they use for grooming themselves and for picking up small objects. For larger pieces, including food, dogs use four canine or cuspid teeth that are long and pointed.

Slicing action on small food bits is done using 16 premolars, while grinding and crushing support comes from 10 molars at the back of the dog’s mouth.

There are basic steps dog owners can take to keep their pet’s teeth healthy. Toothpastes and toothbrushes designed specially for dogs are already available in the market. The finger brush – similar to that for the human infant – is a rubber hood worn by the owner over his finger. The product has soft rubber bristles on one side and is used by the owner to clean the teeth and massage the gums of his pet. The finger brush can later be replaced by a regular dog toothbrush after the pet becomes accustomed to the cleaning process.

Brushing a dog’s teeth should be done at a 45-degree angle, at the junction where they meet the gums. Small circular motions are ideal, followed by vertical strokes. This two-step process will help pull out and discourage the formation of plaque. The owner should brush his pet’s teeth several times a week, making sure that all teeth are covered.

For affluent owners, bringing their dogs to a veterinarian for scaling and polishing every two or three years will also help. Since the goal is to make these check-ups regular, making the dog used to being handled as early as possible will make it comfortable even when its mouth and teeth are being held and prevent it from becoming angry or biting.

Owners should be aware of the things their pets eat and play with. Rawhide chews, knobby plastic toys and some other items are also part of dental hygiene, as they are not hard enough to damage teeth and help in the cleaning process. However, small toys and real bones should be monitored, as they would pose problems if they break into pieces and are swallowed.
