Heritage fisheries are charily maintained waters preserves in assorted parts of the world where a tradition or habitat surrounding fishing has been cosseted from nowadays’s state hazards. A heritage fishery may be a lake, stream or part of the ocean; its milieu having excluding to do with its heritage designation than preservation of a certain adapt or era. Heritage fishing’s intent is twofold: to experience fishing as it was in the previous and to defend fishing for the outlook.

Glendalough State Park is the newest member of the Minnesota State Parks family. Its land was given to the pomp by a reserved giver in the 1990s and the lakes on the commons acreage were fished privately for virtually a hundred living. No one other than members of the patron’s family or their guests was tolerable to use the lakes at Glendalough State Park. As an effect, fish sizes and populations in the Glendalough lakes are more representative of historic time than of advanced times.

Annie Battle Lake, the leading of the Glendalough Lakes, allows the angler to experience fishing as it was in Minnesota during the 1800s. Motors of any kind are not allowed on the lake. Canoes and rowboats are open for payment at the park office and coast fishing is a pleasure from any scene here. Gas powered vehicles are prohibited, as are any type of electronic fish-finding apparatus.

Large deep, panfish, walleye and northern hilltop abound under the crystal plain waters of Annie Battle Lake because the waters are unpolluted by gas or oil. Catch-and-free regulations and fishing limits are harshly enforced here, maintaining the magnitude and regard of the population for generations to come. A small rivulet connecting Annie Battle Lake to another of the park lakes is waist immersed with a dirty floor, providing brilliant wading areas for bass fishing.

The Lave Net Fishery at Blackrock on the Severn Estuary in Wales is the last of its kind in Wales and has also been designated as a heritage fishery. Treacherous tidal waters averaging speeds of 7-8 knots have witnessed generations of fishers throw along this fishing style. Less than a dozen lave net the Welsh government issued fishing licenses each year, with all belong with a citizen association keen to preserving this exclusive method of salmon fishing. The only noticeable difference between current and historic lave netters are that they now sport waders as opposite to animal skins. The lave net itself, a Y-shaped form constructed of lumber and a hand-made net, remainder unchanged. Anglers wade into the river and “cringe,” waiting at the salmon to tactic him, or timepiece for the telltale salmon splashes announcing their location. The fisher can then net the fish before they supervise to deeper water. This kind of fishing is restricted by law and by the tides. Anglers have about 1.5 hours before low surge to procedure their vessel when conditions are calm. Their data of the tides and of the spot, normal from the generation before, serves as their lead.

Kjaerra Laxefiske on the Kjaerrafossen River near Helgeland, Norway dates back to 1388. Ownership of the two heritage fisheries here is distinct by the “markebol,” a medieval troop of measurement. Salmon are caught via the use of olden fishing tools, while the buildings surrounding the fisheries were restored to medieval wood and mineral during the 1950s. Visitors are welcomed to the weekly cavity of salmon pots every Thursday where the grasp of the week is revealed. Wherever they are located, heritage fisheries are an important part of the environment and the village. Besides offering the clean excite of fishing itself, they bestow an opportunity to learn from the former, as well as preserving the present heritage of fishing for upcoming anglers.

Puppy house training requires a great deal of attention during the first days after your puppy is brought home. If at all possible you should arrange that you are at home for a couple of days at least, so that you can give the attention to house training successfully.

What is required is consistency and persistency. Your puppy will need to be taken outside every half hour to hour. Accidents will happen but you should endeavour to have him outside before he has an accident inside the house. This means taking him out regularly and keeping a watch for the tell-tale signs:

• Sniffing
• Circling
• Backing Up.

Each puppy has his own routine but as soon as you recognize his sign for wanting to pee or poo, you should immediately pick him up and take him outside.

There are various times when you should definitely take him outside as these are times when he is likely to need it:

• First thing in the morning when he wakes up
• Last thing at night before he goes to his bed
• After eating or drinking
• After playing or obedience training
• When he wakes up from a nap
• Anytime after he gets excited.

So, how does the puppy crate come into this? A dog has a natural instinct to have a den and also to not soil its den. You can provide your puppy with a crate and if you associate it with pleasure, it will become his den.

The crate should only be large enough that he can lie down in it and turn around in it. I recommend the plastic variety of dog crate. If the crate is too large, he could make a den in one corner and still soil another part of the crate.

The advantage of the crate is that once you have your puppy used to it and happy to stay in for a while, then you can leave him in it when you can’t pay full attention to him. He will not soil the crate. As soon as you take him out of it, you can take him outside to relieve himself if he needs to.

The third and final method I am covering is crate training. This is a more specific training method but will make house training your puppy so much easier. Dogs have a natural instinct to have a den which they will not soil. You can make use of this instinct to make house training an easier process.

You will need to get yourself a dog crate which is just big enough for your puppy to lie down in and to turn around in.

To get your puppy used to the crate, you can use positive reinforcement. Firstly, give him treats while he is next to the crate. Then gradually put a treat slightly inside the crate while he watches – to entice him part way into the crate. Gradually put the treats further and further inside until he is all the way in.

When he has been in a few times, you can shut the door and immediately open it again and give a treat. Gradually increase the time the door stays shut. You can put a favorite toy inside the crate so he has something to occupy him. Using this process, your puppy will develop strong positive associations with the crate and will be happy to stay in it.

Food intolerances, defined as a dog inability to digest a certain kind of dog food, are far more common in dogs than food allergies. Compare dog food intolerances to allergies: only 10% to 12% of the canine population has allergies while up to 50% could suffer from an intolerance. Nearly half of all dogs are unable to stomach a certain kind of food and could become sick within half an hour of consuming it.

There is a distinction that needs to be made between food allergies and food intolerances. Food allergies are true allergies and show the characteristic symptoms of itching and skin problems associated with canine and feline allergies. Food intolerances can result in diarrhea or vomiting and do not create a typical allergic response. Food intolerances in pets would be similar to people that get diarrhea or an upset stomach from eating spicy or fried foods. Fortunately, both food intolerances and allergies can be eliminated with a diet free from offending agents.

While milk is not necessary to a dog diet, it can be a treat if given from time to time. However, some dogs cannot tolerate milk because they do not produce an enzyme called lactase. Lactase helps with the digestion of lactose, which is found in milk. After weaning, the level of lactase activity falls to about 10 per cent of its peak activity. In some animals, diarrhea will occur if more lactose (i.e. milk) is consumed than the pet can digest. This is called “lactose intolerance”. On the contrary, in dogs that are able to tolerate it, milk can be an excellent source of protein and calcium.

A dog may develop intolerance to foods that they have been eating for years. Closely monitoring your dog diet is the best way to manage an intolerance. Vitamins and minerals are essential in maintaining tissue and are required for energy. Every time you feed your dog food that he or she cannot stomach, your dog is missing out on these necessary nutrients.

Most dogs do best with a varied diet. Variety helps keep immune systems strong and maintain good health. It also may help prevent food intolerance, obesity, allergies and other problems. Variety may also protect a dog from nutrient deficiencies not yet discovered by science. Many people provide variety by first feeding a dry food that matches the dietary requirements of the breed, age, activity level and overall health. Then they rotate high quality canned or raw foods for protein from a variety of sources.

It is important to identify an intolerance as soon as possible. There are several ingredients in commercial and natural dog food and any one of them could be the cause of the problem. Often there is information in the latest dog food reviews that can help you find a healthy alternative for your dog.

If your dog intolerance is caused by a common ingredient, then you will need to read labels extra carefully before feeding your dog anything. Management of dog food intolerances is relatively simple once the root of the problem is identified.

Dog shelters or Dog pounds are governmental or private shelter houses for stray or abandoned dogs and provide shelter to these animals until they find foster-homes, are claimed by previous owners or placed in other similar institutions. Dog shelters are the best possible sources of pet dogs for low-income families.

Some of these shelters are the so-called kill shelters, which mean that if a dog has health or temperamental problems that are no longer manageable within the available resources, then it will be euthanized or “killed kindly”. At times even healthy dogs need to be euthanized due to lack of space or funding.

Some shelters, usually in the private sector choose to be No-kill shelters. These provide support to healthy and adoptable dogs for the rest of their lives or until they find other owners. However the drawback is that many animals are not accepted in these shelters due to lack of funds or space limitations. A few of the private dog shelters provide low-cost spaying and neutering before the dogs are placed. Often initial veterinary care and vaccination (except rabies) are also provided to these animals.

Many aspiring dog-owners prefer pet shops to obtain their pets. However many of these dogs end up in dog shelters or are simply left out on the streets. Animal welfare organizations are now working to create awareness among the general public about the large number of adoptable dogs available in various dog shelters and the often-poor condition of dogs in the pet shops. Once you do decide to adopt a dog from a dog shelter, the best would be to search for such organizations in your area in your local yellow papers. You may also search on the Internet for “dog shelters” or “animal shelters” with the name of your city. After you find such a facility, you should visit it a few times and observe the staff interacting with the dogs while they go about their chores of cleaning the runs and feeding the animals. Note the behavior of the staff towards the dogs, and vice versa. It will help you in deciding if you want to adopt a dog from this particular facility or not.

Many of these dogs might already be home trained. However no history is usually available on stray dogs. But if you research well you are very likely to find a dog that is most appropriate for your particular economic and domestic situation. And most importantly you just might have saved an animal from being euthanized or having to live in a shelter house all his life. So if you are a dog-lover on the lookout for a worthy canine companion, the nearest dog shelter is the place to go shopping.

One of four Belgian Sheepdogs, the Belgian Tervuren is often mistaken for a German Shepherd because they closely resemble each other in size, coat and color. It is pronounced Ter-VER-en. The Belgian Tervuren is recognized as its own breed by the AKC, but many countries consider all four Belgian Sheepdogs to be one breed even though there are noticeable differences in everything from coat to size to color.

Also known as a “Terv” by their owners, the Belgian Tervuren is named for the Belgian village of Tervuren. They were traditionally used as cattle and sheep herding dogs. They have also been used as police dogs and in narcotics detection, bomb detection, search and rescue and as therapy dogs. While two of the Belgian Sheepdogs are still used more as working dogs, the Belgian Tervuren and Belgian Groenendael are both seen more as companion dogs today.

They are a medium to medium large breed. They weigh between 45-75 pounds and are anywhere from 22″ to 27″ in height. They are an energetic, powerful breed that enjoys exercise and play. Because of their high energy and size, they are not ideal apartment dogs but are perfect for families with large yards or those who have access to parks or fields where they can run.

Their coat color is recognized by the AKC in the colors of a mahogany or fawn base with black tips, mask and ears. A small amount of white on nose, chest and chin is permissible. The long, straight, thick and harsh outer coat and soft dense undercoat needs daily grooming to prevent matting and knots. They shed throughout the year, but it is typically light shedding.

As a guard dog or family dog, the Belgian Tervuren is protective, loyal and highly intelligent. They are energetic dogs that need plenty of exercise and activity whether they are working on the farm or kept mainly as a companion dog. They need to be socialized and trained from an early age. The earlier they are introduced to children, dogs and other pets, the better they will do. They might be dominant towards other dogs. It is important to research a Belgian Tervuren’s history before making a purchase to ensure that there is no aggression found in their lineage. Give your Belgian Tervuren plenty to do and they will be happy. A bored Belgian Tervuren can be a bit destructive as they will find a way to fill their time.

If you are an energetic family looking for a dog that will enjoy activity and outside play, then the Belgian Tervuren is a perfect breed for you. They will match you step for step in running or walking. They will be protective of you and your home and make awesome watchdogs. If you are looking for a farm dog and family companion all rolled into one, any of the Belgian Sheepdogs including the Belgian Tervuren will be ideal for you.

Hi, my name is Dr. Michelle DeLucia from Pet Doctors of America. Thank you so much for joining us on the Pet Doctor Blog. Today, we’re going to talk about the first aid and emergency care for a snake bite on a dog.

We have been seeing an increased prevalence of snake bites with dogs in our area lately and we want you to know what to do if your pet has been bitten by a snake.

The most important thing is to get your pet to a veterinary clinic as soon as possible. What you’ll want to do is try to immobilize the area that was bitten and also to consider muzzling your pet so that he or she does not react to your trying to help them. It is important also to try to identify the type of snake that has bitten your dog, but never try to capture or kill the snake as you can end up getting injured yourself.

Snake bites can cause severe shock and rapid death in pets and there are a lot of factors involved in how adverse the reaction will be to a snake bite such as the size of your pet, the size of the snake that has bitten them and the amount of venom injected. We do offer treatment such as anti-inflammatories and anti-venom that can certainly help your pet do much better after having a snake bite, but is very important to get them in as quickly as possible.

If your pet has been bitten by a snake, do assume that the snake is poisonous and seek veterinary care immediately.

Thank you so much for joining us on the Pet Doctor Blog today and if you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact us. Thank you.
